Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe

I have a recipe for Ham and Cheese Sliders that has been a hit with readers for many years.

I decided to add a Hawaiian twist to that slider recipe in the form of grilled pineapple brushed with a soy and ginger marinade.

Sliders are the perfect party or game day snack. Most people can’t resist these warm little sandwiches complete with juicy ham, melted Swiss cheese, melted butter, and of course the addition of the tangy sweet pineapple.

Ingredients in Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders

To make these fabulous sliders that everyone goes crazy for, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Hawaiian rolls – Hawaiian rolls are best way to go although you can try regular hamburger buns in a pinch
  • Ham
  • Brown sugar – this is to marinate the pineapple and brush the marinade on the top of the rolls
  • Soy sauce –  for the marinade
  • Ginger –  fresh, dried, or ginger paste
  • Garlic
  • Pineapple slices
  • Swiss cheese
  • Butter –  unsalted or salted
  • Parsley –  I like to use dried but you can use fresh

How To Make Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders

Preheat your oven to 350F and get out a 9×13-inch pan.

Slice through a 12-count package of Hawaiian rolls horizontally, lay the bottom “slab” of the rolls in the pan, and top them with ham.

In a small bowl make the marinade by combining the pineapple juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.

Brush it over the pineapple slices and place them in a hot grill pan.

Grilling the pineapple slices is optional and you can instead simply just add the brushed pineapple rings directly to the ham and rolls.

Reserve the remaining marinade for brushing over the top rolls before baking.

If you’re grilling the pineapple, grill it for about one minute per side, or until grill marks appear and add it on top, slice the rings if half if needed so they fit in the buns, and lay them on top of the ham.

Add the cheese and top with the other half slab of Hawaiian rolls.

To the reserved marinade, add melted butter and dried parsley, and brush this generously over the top of the rolls.

Tent your pan with foil and bake for about 15 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

What Kind Of Ham is Best in Ham Sandwiches?

I used Black Forest ham, but most any thinly sliced ham will work. You’ll need about one pound.

I prefer to get ham at the deli counter in my grocery store but pre-packaged packets are okay.

In theory if you have leftover ham from say a Honey Baked Ham, that would be fine.

What Kind Of Pineapple Should I Use in Hawaiian Sliders?

I used canned pineapple rings which is definitely the easiest unless of course you have a fresh pineapple on hand.

Feel free to use fresh pineapple, too.

Just make sure to slice it as thin as canned rings are and core it.

Can Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders Be Made in Advance?

Being that there is such minimal work involved in this recipe, I suggest prepping these rolls right before you plan to bake them.

I suppose you could prep them a couple of hours in advance of when you want to bake them, cover them, and refrigerate for up to 2 hours, and then bake them off.

Although with this you do run the risk of the bread either drying out from being in the fridge. Or potentially turning a bit soggy.

In terms of baking them in advance and letting them sit out, they will keep fine for a reasonable amount of time at room temp after you bake them.

However, I think they are best warm and fresh right out of the oven.

If you have extra, they’ll keep airtight in the fridge for a few days, too.

Tips For the Best Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders

I like to grill the pineapple after I marinate it to give it some extra candied and grilled flavor.

However, this is optional and you can simply marinate it and then put the pineapple rings on the rolls.

Make sure to save the marinade to use and mix it with melted butter to brush over the tops of the rolls.

This really brings out the Hawaiian flavor profile aspect because you get an extra pop of pineapple flavor.

Ingredients

  • 12-roll count Hawaiian rolls
  • 1 pound ham, thinly sliced* (See Notes)
  • 2 teaspoons light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (I use Lite)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (dried ground ginger or ginger paste may be substituted)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 20-ounce can pineapple slices, drained with 2 tablespoons pineapple juice reserved** (See Notes)
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted or salted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley (finely topped fresh may be substituted)

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13 inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
    2. Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally and place the bottom half in the pan.
    3. Evenly distribute and lay the ham over the bottom of the rolls; set aside.
    4. Optionally, heat a grill pan or cast iron pan over medium high heat.*** (See Notes)
    5. To a small bowl, add the 2 tablespoons reserved pineapple juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.
    6. Brush the marinade over the pineapple slices and optionally place them in the hot pan. Or simply add them over the top of the ham on the rolls. Reserve the remaining marinade.
    7. Grill the pineapple for approximately 1 minute per side, or until it has grill marks.
    8. Cut the rings in half, or as needed, and lay them over the ham.
    9. Evenly distribute and layer the cheese over the pineapple.
    10. Place the remaining half of the of the top rolls over the pineapple.
    11. Add the melted butter and parsley to the reserved marinade.
    12. Brush this buttery marinade mixture over the tops of the rolls.
    13. Tent a piece of aluminum foil over the rolls and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted.
    14. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes, or until lightly golden browned. Keep an eye on them. Serve the sliders immediately warm and fresh. Extra sliders will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 5 days, reheat gently in a toaster oven or microwave.

Notes

*I used Black Forest ham, but most any thinly sliced ham will work. I prefer to get ham at the deli counter in my grocery store but pre-packaged packets are okay. In theory if you have leftover ham from say a Honey Baked Ham, that would be fine.

**Fresh pineapple may be used noting you will need a bit of supplemental pineapple juice (2 tablespoons) for the marinade.

***You don’t have to grill the pineapple but I find it adds an extra amount of great caramelization. If you’re not grilling it, simply move on to making the marinade and then brush it over ungrilled pineapple.
